Mission statement
Latin American Women's Aid is a Refuge for women and their children from Latin America and the Spanish speaking Caribbean who have suffered domestic violence.
We believe in and promote women's independence and autonomy, as well as a non-violent environment for women and their children.
Latin American Women's Aid aims to provide:
- Temporary accommodation
- Practical supportive advice and information for women and children at the refuge and to assist them in securing safe move-on accommodation
- A telephone line for emergencies and advice for women who do not access the refuge
- Referrals to other agencies
Through publicity and seminars we contribute towards the awareness of domestic violence within society at large, and of the Latin American community in particular, on the impact of violence against women, thus helping ensure that "women's rights are human rights"
Latin American Women's Aid opposes discrimination in all its forms: on the grounds of race, sexuality, disability, age, religion, class, culture, HIV status and other circumstances. In addition, Latin American Women's Aid respect women's rights to self-determination.
Although our services are for women from Latin American and the Spanish speaking Caribbean, within its limited resources Latin American Women's Aid offers its services to other Spanish and Portuguese speaking women who have suffered domestic violence and do not have access to other services.
